10.4 Education

We will increase the delivery of road safety education and training programmes in educational establishments.

Streets and roads present a forbidding environment for children. Training is essential to to teach them how to behave safely in the presence of motor vehicles. Training will also give children the skills which will prepare them to travel independently. We will continue and improve the delivery of our road safety training programmes through schools and integrate them with the adoption of School Travel Plans.

10.4.1 Training Schemes

Within the road safety group a new team of eight officers will deliver training programmes to;
  • Develop and evaluate the child pedestrian training programme Right Start
  • Facilitate the delivery of the child cyclist programme Passport to Safer Cycling
  • Support and empower all educational establishments to deliver road safety initiatives using a planned and progressive model at all levels.
We will also address the need to offer training to adults who wish to learn to ride a bicycle or who wish to return to cycling. We will closely examine the new standards for cycle training put forward by the DfT.

10.4.2 Transitional Project

The team will use a holistic approach at Key Stage 3 to prepare children for independent travel in the transition from primary to high school. To address road safety as well as school travel, safety on buses and the Lancashire Healthy School Programme it will;
  • Commission a professional theatre company to produce a bespoke drama the first of its kind
  • Produce a curriculum linked educational package
  • Engage with young people in the development of the project
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of this type of intervention.
