Lancashire is a large and varied county where each community has its own accessibility needs. In delivering our first Local Transport Plan we have made great progress in identifying and meeting their individual requirements. We are proud that our efforts were rewarded in 2004 with the title of Local Transport Authority of the Year.
Everybody needs access to services. Children have to go to school, workers must get to their jobs, families require their weekly shopping and we all have appointments with doctors and dentists. Our quality of life depends upon these services being readily available. In this our second Local Transport Plan, we will take a further step to make Lancashire a place where people can travel easily and safely.
We want the roads to be safe for everyone and we are working hard to reduce road casualties. More children are injured in disadvantaged areas and we will take action in the areas where it will have the greatest effect. We want to meet everybody’s travel needs too. Car ownership continues to grow and some of the most difficult journeys are on the way to work. We will work to manage the network more effectively to ease congestion. At the same time, we will reduce the load on the network. We will improve the highway environment to persuade more people to walk, cycle and go by public transport.
We will invest in the highway network to maintain our roads and, when other measures cannot offer a solution, we will build new links. Many members of society still do not own a car and without good public transport they may be put at risk of social exclusion. We will work with service providers to give them access to the services that they require.
To the Government, we want to play our part in fulfilling the national and regional objectives. To our residents, we want to make Lancashire a good place for people to live and work, now and in the future.![]()
