The Environmental Procurement Policy (EPP) is the first step towards reducing the environmental impact of County Council procurement decisions; one of the requirements of the EPP is that a copy of the Policy should be sent with all new tenders.
To assist with the effective implementation of the Policy and to encourage employees and suppliers to incorporate environmental issues into their practices, an environmental procurement awareness-training programme has been developed. The first seminars, presented by Barbara Morton of UMIST and the DTI, took place at County Hall in September 2004. The seminars provided delegates with an introduction to the drivers behind environmental procurement in local government, the benefits of environmental purchasing and an understanding of the Environmental Purchasing Policy in practice.
