Agenda 21 is the global action plan for sustainable development, and is divided into 4 sections (Social and Economic Dimensions; Conservation and Management of Resources for Development; Strengthening the Role of Major Groups; and Means of Implimentation). At the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, over 150 nations including the UK signed and committed to pursue sustainable development goals through Agenda 21.
Part of Agenda 21 encourages local authorities to work to develop their own ‘Local Agenda 21’ action plans. In response to this, Lancashire County Council published:
Local Agenda 21 Strategy ‘A Vision for the 21st Century’ in June 2000
The strategy was then reviewed every year.
