Landscape, Heritage and Wildlife

The landscape we see today is the result of thousands of years of interaction with man and natural processes. However, the influence man is having on the landscape is becoming increasingly more apparent, primarily through the development and growth of our towns and cities, and the road and rail links that connect them.

Human activity is a major factor contributing to species extinction, and i n the UK alone, we have lost over 100 species this century, with many more species and habitats in danger of disappearing.

The majority of our ‘natural wilderness’ areas are now carefully managed to help provide high-quality habitats for the flora and fauna that inhabit them. All these interactions are complex in nature but they provide us with an ever-changing inheritance, giving people and place a sense of identity and significance.
