This Environmental Policy Statement summarises the Council’s environmental objectives and commitment to meeting, and where possible exceeding legislative requirements. It is published alongside the Environmental Management Strategy, and provides an overarching Policy Statement for the Strategy.
The Policy represents the County Council’s first corporate commitment to the performance management of its own environmental impacts, and will constitute the first stage towards the development of certified environmental management systems (EMS) across the authority. Eventual implementation of an EMS would demonstrate the County Council’s commitment to continually improving environmental performance.

The Lancashire County Council Environmental Management Strategy is a policy document, which will help the Council to fulfil its corporate commitments for ‘Protecting the Environment’. It sets out how the Council intends to deliver the objectives in the Environmental Policy Statement.
Until now, there has been no overall coordination of the internal environment management procedures of the authority. This Strategy is a first step towards achieving this.
The Strategy sets out key aims under the following themes:
Associated with each theme are a number of objectives to improve environmental performance.
The Strategy was developed by the County Council’s Environmental Management Strategy Steering Group, and assisted by staff from the Environment Policy Team. A series of workshop sessions involving officers from across the County Council, elected members and partner organisations (including the Wildlife Trust, Groundwork, District Councils, English Nature, the Environment Agency and North West Action for Sustainability) developed the environmental themes into actions and targets.
Implementing the Strategy will be a major task, requiring the commitment and involvement of all Council services, staff across all directorates, and elected members. The Environmental Management Strategy Steering Group will provide Directorate input to the implementation and monitoring of the Strategy.
