The Lancashire Environment Strategy was launched on 10th June 2005 at an official event at County Hall, Preston.

The event was a big success, raising a great deal of awareness about the Strategy and environmental issues in Lancashire. The launch even made headline news on Radio Lancashire! Over 120 partners and stakeholders came along to celebrate the development of Lancashire’s first environment strategy.

The highlight of the event was a keynote speech by Jonathon Porritt, the Head of the UK Sustainable Development Commission. Jonathon’s speech was highly enthralling and really brought home the importance of protecting our environment.

Hazel Harding, the Leader of the County Council and Chief Executive Chris Trinick praised the event and the work that has been done in developing the Strategy. CC Harding said, “Lancashire has a good reputation for environmental work but there is still much more to be done if we are to work towards environmental sustainability”

There was great consensus that this is just the beginning and now the hard work really starts in ensuring the Strategy is delivered. We now need all partners to help in ensuring we work together to implement the actions and protect our environment.

Jonathon Porritt stated, “The development of the Lancashire Environment Strategy marks a new chapter in the story of sustainable development in Lancashire. It provides a framework to work from and a good opportunity to bring a greater focus on the environment in the county over the next 5 years”.

Mr Porritt also praised the Strategy’s focus on partnership work within the education and health sectors

Background to the Lancashire Environment Strategy

In December 2003 the Lancashire Local Agenda 21 Strategy was dissolved and absorbed within the community planning process. Many of the social and economic elements of sustainable development have now been framed within other strategies and programmes and then absorbed within community strategies (view the Lancashire Community Strategy). There is a need to develop a similar approach for objectives relating to environmental sustainability, thus preserving the 3 elements of sustainable development. The Lancashire Environment Strategy aims to do this by providing an over-arching framework to protect and enhance Lancashire’s environment.

Part one of the Strategy provides an outline of the context within which the Strategy is set, and the process of developing and implementing it. Part two provides the action plan element and is divided into 4 key themes:

Climate Change
Health and the Environment
Sustainable Resource Management
Landscape, Heritage and Wildlife

A fifth cross-cutting theme has been developed to cover the areas of education and awareness raising.
