Lancashire Environment 2002

Environment and Social Deprivation

This indicator reveals that 39% of all the major sources of polluting emissions to air and 19% of all reported pollution incidents in Lancashire occur where the most deprived 7% of the population lives.

We do not have information on how environmental issues impact upon different sections of the community in different ways.

These indicators show that the most deprived sections of the community may be exposed to higher environmental risks.

Research carried out at by Friends of the Earth suggests that people living in deprived areas are more likely to be exposed to pollution sources.

The indicator has been created by mapping two separate data sets against the ranking of wards by their Index for Multiple Deprivation, compiled by Government.

The data sets are :

i) The locations of the major emissions to air as regulated by the Environment Agency (Part A emissions).
ii) The locations of all pollution incidents, including to air, water and land, reported to the Environment Agency.
