The total number of complaints about noise received in 2000/01 was 46% higher than in 1988/89. The number of complaints about domestic noise has risen by 86% to 4601 whilst the number about noise from an industrial/commercial source has fallen from 1607 to 1140.
Domestic complaints accounted for 76% of the total in 2000/01. This may reflect the increasingly high specification of home music and entertainment equipment.
Many of the traditional heavy industries that may have involved more noisy processes, have continued to decline in the last decade. The growth in service employment and the newer IT based industries are not leading to the same problems.
What is the role of LCC and other agencies?
The County Council has no direct role in the monitoring and regulation of noise. It is a district council function provided through environmental health departments. The police can get involved if persistent violations of regulations occur.
