Lancashire Environment 2002

Landscape - Woodlands

There was a 23% increase in woodland area in Lancashire between 1986 and 1998. Despite this, the County still has one of the lowest percentage woodland covers in the country at 4.3% with the average for England being 8.4%.

61% of the woodland is in just two of the districts - Ribble Valley and Lancaster and all but four of the districts have less then 4% woodland cover. Fylde's woodland cover actually declined over the period.

62% of ancient woodland is in the Lancaster district and three districts - Pendle, Rossendale and Fylde - have less than 2% of the total between them.

What is the role of LCC and other agencies?

Lancashire County Council was the first in England to publish its Indicative Forestry Strategy in 1994.

LCC undertakes woodland planting and management on its own land holding and as part of its land reclamation programme and offers practical advice and assistance to others involved in woodland planting and management and the marketing of local woodland products.

The Forestry Commission is the principal source of grant-aid for new woodland planting and woodland management.

Lancashire County Council also participates in initiatives and partnerships which seek to increase and enhance woodland cover in the county, including the Lancashire Woodlands Project, Elwood, and the Forest of Burnley.
