Landscape Character

The methodology for classifying types of landscapes has changed since 1991. The map shows the Landscape Character tracts identified in the 2001 Lancashire Landscape Strategy.

Measures of landscape change are not currently well developed, although we do have figures for woodlands and ponds - both important landscape features (pages 31 and 35). There is a need to develop further indicators which can be monitored.

There are two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Lancashire at Arnside and Silverdale and the Forest of Bowland.

What is the role of LCC and other agencies?

LCC has led the updating of landscape assessment within the County with the production of A Landscape Strategy for Lancashire. The County Council was assisted in this project by grant aid from the Countryside Agency and financial assistance from Lancashire's District Councils and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

LCC has approached the Countryside Agency for funding assistance to set up a programme for monitoring landscape change.

The Landscape Strategy will form the basis of future Joint Structure Plan Policy on landscape.
