The link road was officially opened to traffic by the Mayor of Chorley, Councillor Adrian Lowe, the Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, County Councillor Tony Martin and Tony Dixon, Regional Managing Director of Birse Civils Ltd.
The opening was 15 weeks ahead of schedule and within budget. Further remedial work and landscaping will continue into the new year.

Bridgeworks. Paving and bank protection works beneath the bridge have been completed. Beams to the centre and east spans have been placed in position. The placing of reinforcing steel to the deck spans has commenced. Concreting of west and centre deck spans is finished.
Roadworks. Drainage works are progressing - including carrier drains, filter drains, gullies and connections, manhole benching and finishing. Two further Great Crested Newt tunnels have been positioned, and are now complete. The installation of lighting ducts is continuing. Soiling to batter slopes continues. Kerbing is still in progress, as is laying of the sub-base. Road surfacing has started between Lower Burgh Way roundabout and Burgh Lane.

Bridgeworks. Paving and bank protection works beneath the bridge have commenced. The beams to the west span have been placed in position; access scaffold for the next beam placing operations are being prepared. Roadworks. Drainage works are progressing, including construction of carrier drains, filter drains, gullies and connections, manhole benching and finishing. The rising main diversion has been completed. Great Crested Newt tunnels are now in position. Construction of lighting ducts has started.
Burgh Lane has been diverted to allow the excavation of the old lane and capping is under way. Lower Burgh Way roundabout excavation and capping has been completed. Soiling to the batter slopes continues. The laying of kerbs has started at the Lower Burgh Way end.
Bridgeworks. The concreting works to the east pier cill beam and east bankseat are complete. Bearing plinths have been cast. Preparatory works for beam placing and paving beneath the bridges has started.
Roadworks. Drain laying continues. Road gullies and connections have now started. Earthworks cut-and-fill operations are complete, side slopes trimmed and soiled, mitigation ponds excavated. Sub-base laying continues, and is now complete from Lower Burgh Way to the bridge. The Rising main diversion has been satisfactorily tested; final connections are to be done in June.
Bridgeworks. The piling to the bankseats has been completed and the bases cast. The pier columns are complete and the cill beam linking the columns on the west side has been cast.
Roadworks. The ballstop fence to the school has been completed. Drainage works continue. Earthworks cut and fill operations continue and will be completed in early May. Sub-base materials are being spread from the Lower Burgh Way access towards the school roundabout.
A new gallery of photographs showing the works in progress has been added. This will be added to as the scheme progresses.

Roadworks. Service Authority diversions continue. Tree clearance has now been completed, including those downed in the recent storms. The erection of permanent fencing continues including a screen fence to Four Winds. Earthworks excavation and fill operations continue to progress. Drainage works are continuing, including the rising main diversion.
Bridgeworks. At the River Yarrow Bridge, access roads have been constructed. Work to construct the bridge pier base foundations has started. Ground support and excavations of the east and west pier bases is under way.
Roadworks. Service Authority diversions continue including that of a High Voltage Overhead cable. Soil stripping is complete and construction of permanent fencing is continuing. Main earthworks operations have now started with the excavation of site materials modified with lime and cement being deposited in the embankments. Drainage works have also started.
Roadworks. The Service Authorities' subcontractors have continue the associated diversion works at Lower Burgh Way, Burgh Lane and the A6. Tree clearance has continued. Permanent fencing to the site and a screen fence on Lower Burgh Way erected. Topsoil has been stripped throughout the site and stone fill imported between the east side of the River Yarrow and A6 junction.
A new Images section has been added to the site. This includes a 'visualisation' of the scheme: you can 'fly over' or 'drive along' the proposed road to gain an impression of how the completed scheme will look. Visit the Images section.
Lancashire County Council has awarded the £4m roadworks contract to Birse Civils, part of the Balfour Beatty Group. The work will commence on Monday 4 December with estimated completion in autumn 2007.
The Link Road contract is now out to tender and the tender return date is 6th October 2006 with a possible construction start date in December 2006.

It is currently programmed that tenders for the construction of the link road will be invited in August 2006 from a list of Contractors drawn from the response to a pre-qualification questionnaire as required under EU procurement law. Construction works are expected to commence in November.
Prior to the commencement of the main construction works an advanced contract to fell trees and translocate ancient woodland soil to a nearby receptor site has been completed recently. Also, investigation works to locate possible mineshafts on the line of the new road have been carried out.
In a few weeks time work will start to create an access to the site adjacent to the TELENT factory off Carr Lane.
