Maintenance

Below is an example maintenance plan:

Maintenance Plan

Zone Description Management Arrangements
1 Planting on frontage of site, designed to screen out traffic on adjacent road and reduce pollution A 50/50 mix of native evergreen and deciduous species will require some thinning after 3-7 years and gradual replacement of shrub species after 10-15 years.
2 Close mown fine lawn area for occasional small team or ball games and for outdoor activities. Important to retain and maintain fence separating area from car park and to cylinder mow lawn on a regular basis with cuttings boxed off. Boundary with frontage planting to be mown in April and September to encourage wildflowers and insects.
3 & 9 Small raised flowerbeds planted with herbs and insect attracting perennials and annuals. Annuals need to be replaced between April and June. Weeding as necessary between April and September.
4 Outdoor classroom
5 Patio area immediately outside building, intended as overflow space in fine weather and to attract wildlife. Shrubs have been selected to encourage insects and birds by providing food and habitat.
6 Play Equipment
7 & 8 Summer Meadow Area Meadow to be cut in April and October, with cuttings removed for animal feed or composting. Species to be regularly monitored and recorded, and greater diversity encouraged with gradual introduction of individual wildflower plants after first cut.
10 & 11
Mixed shelterbelt of native species shrubs and small to medium sized trees.
1m weed-free ring using mulch to be sustained for at least 5 years and regular watering as necessary, especially in Year 1.
12 & 13 Existing Playing Fields with hedged boundary of native species providing habitat corridors and reduction of winter winds. Playing field area to be close mown to a height of 20-50mm during growing season with pitches alternated annually to spread wear. Hedges should be cut on alternate years between November and the end of January.
