Edenfield Memorial Garden

Community Design Logo

The Memorial Garden on Market Street in Edenfield was neglected for many years and became overgrown and tired looking. Despite this, the garden was well used by the community and passing cyclists, so the Edenfield and District Horticultural Society (EDHS) decided to try to enhance it for these people, and to encourage others in the village to enjoy it.

Bulb planting in the memorial garden

EDHS carried out a consultation exercise with local residents at a plant sale in May 2004 where ideas were put forward on how the garden could be improved. Community Design assisted by commissioning a Landscape Proposals plan from Groundwork East Lancashire which incorporated many of these ideas and was used to attract over £22,000 of funding from Awards for All, Lancashire Small Sites Reclamation Programme, the Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund, Lancashire Environmental Fund, the Edenfield and District Horticultural Society and the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.

The project was completed in November 2005. The majority of the works were carried out by a local contractor, overseen by Groundwork, however Edenfield and Stubbins Schools and the local Playgroup also planted a variety of spring flowering bulbs and EDHS purchased and planted shrubs and trees on the site. The Edenfield Village Residents Association kindly donated two recycled plastic seats, and organised the engraving of a new memorial stone, donated by Marshalls Quarry. The Garden was officially re-opened on 4th December 2005, when the local community gathered to celebrate their achievement
