Investing some time and energy in identifying which grant awarding bodies, trusts or charities would be willing to support your project will help in the long term.

Listed below are a number of contacts and resources to which you might wish to refer initially in order to identify possible sources of funding and for help and advice on writing applications.

    Awards for All is a Lottery grants scheme aimed at local communities, that awards grants of between £300 and £10,000 in a simple and straightforward way.     Funding up to £1,000 is open to projects that promote 'co-operative solutions in communities', past funding has included play equipment, fencing and sponsorship of events. The scheme usually purchases equipment or commissions work - cheques do not normally go to a group directly.

  • The Tree Council - Trees for Community Groups - www.treecouncil.org.uk *
    The Tree Council has two funding pots:
    The Community Trees Fund is open to projects where tree planting costs are between £100 and £700. Any applications where the £700 limit is exceeded will automatically be discounted, even if funds are available from another source to cover the excess.

    The Community Champions Fund was set up by the DfES to help support and develop the work of local people who are involved in, or who want to be involved in, changing their communities for the better. The fund also aims to encourage older (50+) volunteers to get involved in helping their communities and to facilitate young people in their own forms of Community Action.

    • improved rural and urban environments, which communities are better able to access and enjoy
    • healthier and more active people and communities

Reaching Communities will give grants of more than £10,000 and up to £500,000, including a maximum of £50,000 for capital grants.

    Comic Relief operates a range of grant programmes that provide funding for projects that benefit people with disabilities or young people. This funding scheme has strict guidelines attached to it an is unlikely to be suitable for most environmental projects.     The English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS) is the Forestry Commission's suite of grants designed to develop the co-ordinated delivery of public benefits from England's woodlands. 
    The aims of the EWGS are:
    to sustain and increase the public benefits given by existing woodlands
    to help create new woodlands to deliver additional public benefit.
