Increasing Diversity In The School Workforce

The House of Commons Select Committee Report (2004) highlighted the need to increase the diversity of the school workforce from under-represented groups, for example ethnic-minority groups and men into Primary. The Recruitment and Retention Team are keen to support this in Lancashire and have become involved in a number of initiatives to improve the diversity of the school workforce.

Graduate & Registered Teacher Programme

Each year we bid for and are allocated a number of places, on this employment based route into teaching, by the Training and Development Agency (formerly the Teacher Training Agency) which are specifically for trainees who will make the teaching workforce more representative of society. Each year this number has grown. In 2002 - 2003 the number of trainees from ethnic minority backgrounds was 7, in 2003 - 2004 it was 13 and the current number for 2004 - 2005 is 17. Of the trainees who have gained QTS, all gained employment.
