Inshore Fishing

Weather

Fishermen have had to keep a close eye on the weather: visibility, wind strength, storms and freezing conditions affect their sailings. Generally the area enjoys mild conditions but it can also be very wet because of all the moisture brought in from the western seas on the prevailing winds. The possibility of flooding by storm surges (strong winds blowing forward the surface waters of a shallow sea) have caused protective walls to be built along the Morecambe seafront.

The weather has affected all fishermen but the worst incident occurred in 1895. Fifteen boats from Morecambe were fishing off Blackpool and were caught in a severe storm, which blew in quickly from the west. Four men drowned and many boats were damaged.
