Inshore Fishing
The fluke, or flounder, a relation of the plaice (Platichthys Flesus) , is also common in the bay which is an important nursery for a number of wet fish, namely herring, bass, sole and brill. Plaice, sprats, mullet, cod and whiting spawn here too. Stow-boat netting for sprats and whitebait began during the First World War and was revived locally in 1958.
There are two species of shrimp in Morecambe Bay: the brown shrimp (Crangon Vulgaris) and the pink shrimp (Pandalus Montagui) , known locally as 'sprawn'. Sprawns are found to the south near Fleetwood, on Heysham Flat and in the deeper channels. They are caught mainly in the spring and autumn.
