Deep Sea Fishing

Preparing to Fish

The first task on sailing would be to check and stow the gear and provisions that had been loaded prior to sailing. Next the ship would be prepared for fishing. The fishing gear would be checked, the fish hold would be cleaned, the engineer would check the engines and pumps. Ice would be broken up and put in layers ready for the fish.

Deck work started at first light as soon as the ship left the dock. The trawlers would normally sail on an ebb tide.
