Deep Sea Fishing
Many industries grew around the fishing industry to support and supply the fishing fleets. Numerous factories provided many different kinds of employment for the local community; rope-making, net-making, basket-making, engineering, chandlery, ice-making, fish processing.
Net-braiding was traditionally a job for the womenfolk. Many worked in the town's braiding rooms. Others made sections of net at home which 'net-fixers' collected and turned into complete trawls. Net sections would often be carried on board as spares.
