Coastal Fishing
A much smaller number of boats fished the Lune using seine or draw nets, up to 600 feet long. This method of fishing dates back at least to medieval times. The net is worked by two or more fishermen. One stays ashore holding a rope attached to one end of the net while the other rows out into the river and back to shore downstream, paying out the net over the stern of the boat as he goes. The two ends are then pulled in, the bottom faster than the top, and any fish are caught in the resulting bag. The net is then rearranged in the stern of the boat for a second draught.
