Cart Shanking and Tractor Fishing

In the north of Morecambe Bay, particularly at Flookburgh, cart shanking became common. Carts fixed with a shrimp trawl (a net attached to a wooden beam approximately 14 feet long) were pulled through the shallow water by horses. In the 1960s tractors began to be used for this type of fishing which has also been carried out from Heysham, Sunderland Point and elsewhere around the Bay.
