Museum of Lancashire

Love Lancashire!

MOL sign

Whatever you love about Lancashire, the all new Museum of Lancashire has something for you!

Lancashire is full of vibrant and talented people, world class scenery and a rich history just waiting to be explored. The all new MOL gives visitors a taste of all things Lancashire, told through the objects and stories of real Lancashire people.

We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us whilst we have been closed; those who have given us feedback and those who have loaned or donated objects to enrich our displays.

We’ve a new team of staff lined up to welcome you so why not explore the new galleries, take part in family friendly workshops, or sample the coffee and cake in our new café.

MoL 2012

The Museum is now open with free admission for the first 12 months.

We've also extended our opening hours, so we'll be open Tuesdays to Saturdays (and Bank Holidays) 10.30am-5pm and Sundays 12 noon to 5pm.

We're more family friendly than ever. There will be a programme of activities and events throughout the year to make sure your family always has something different to see and do! Events and activities will be added regularly so click on the Events and Activities link below to find out what's happening in 2012.

Did you know…

  • Lancashire was home to the man who invented the word dinosaur! Professor Richard Owen from Lancaster was one of the Victorian eras leading fossil experts. He also was the man behind the Natural History Museum in London.

  • Fisherman’s Friends started life as a medicine to prevent Lancashire fishermen getting sea sick.

  • Vimto is not only over 100 years old, but it also started life being called Vimtonic by its Manchester creator. Manchester! – ah yes, Manchester is still part of the historic county of Lancashire, as is Liverpool, Warrington and Barrow in Furness

Find out much, much more in the Museum. Know any interesting Lancashire facts, then we’d love to hear them!
